Celebrating our Yarn Room!

The New England high country produces some of Australia’s finest Merino wool. It is no surprise that the Uralla Wool Room, located in the heart of the New England, has grown to be the retailer of choice for many Australia-wide customers who appreciate the value of fine woollen Australian-made products.

Along with an extensive range of quality clothing and accessories, the Uralla Wool Room includes a yarn room that is full to the brim of colourful yarns and fibres produced in Australia, and from around the world. Quality natural fibre is common denominator across the available range.

The age-old craft of knitting and crochet has soared in popularity, across all age groups, along with a respect for quality, sustainability, and natural products. Knitting and crochet are considered as ‘great stress reducers’, plus the craft offers something tangible like a scarf, socks, beanie, or a jumper when the project is completed. It’s not unusual for knitters, whether they be locals or travellers on a road trip, to call into the Uralla Wool Room with their work for a ‘show-and-tell’ session.

The Yarn Room is special. Aside from picking up supplies, knitters and crocheters also call in to get advice on how to best progress whatever project they are working on, or perhaps just for a chat — it’s all part of the Uralla Wool Room experience!

It’s no wonder that the Yarn Room has carved a special niche in the community. As local, creative knitter and Unravelled member , Susan McMullen, has said, ‘A lot of therapy happens in the Yarn Room’.

Uralla’s Unravelled Knitting Group has extended the skillset of many knitters over recent years.  Each year, members of this group have taken part in a Stephen West Shawl knitting project. Bending the rules a bit to vary the intricate pattern is okay! The objective is practice, and mastering technique. During March 2023, a collection of the Unravelled Knitting Group’s Stephen West Shawl projects will be on display in the window of the Uralla Wool Room. Drop by to see the results!
